                                       PRINCIPLES AND CULTURE

A lot of people ask me how I can manage dozens of companies
and hundreds of people, all of them with good results, engaged
employees and always in expansion. Many of these people ask me
about the mission, vision, and values I implemented, and what
is the secret to make the whole system work even when I am not
          around.

To answer these questions, I want to talk a little about my fa-
vorite movie series: Star Trek. In the movies, the Enterprise’s crew
had some principles and did not give them up. The principles
          were:
“Space: the final frontier. These are the voya-
ges of the starship Enterprise. Its five-year mis-
sion: to explore strange new worlds. To seek out
new life and new civilizations. To boldly go where
                                 no man has gone before!”

My favorite character was captain Kirk, whose posture is still
studied at the West Point academy. He was the guardian of these
principles, but in addition, he never failed to learn something new
and to teach. He always asked for advice for the good of the mis-
sion and to value his teammates, he kept the flame burning, placed
himself at the head of the team in any situation, be it good or
bad, with quick assessments and good results. Above all else, Kirk
carried the mission in his heart, he gave his best, his family was
the crew and the starship and especially, he defended the principles
          with tooth and nail.

                                                                      69
