         In Our Society | Advocacy

 :
ADA Dentist and Student Lobby Day – We are Working Hard for Our Members!
The ADA’s advocating for our profession is one of the most important aspects of being a member. This
benefit was in full force in Washington D.C. from March 30th to April 1st. NYSDA’s representative to the
American Dental Political Action Committee (ADPAC) is our own Dr. Michael Shreck, who attended this
event with over 1200 other attendees including hundreds of dentists, dental students and state staffers.
They made legislative visits to all the Senators and almost every member of Congress. Dr. Shreck’s group
visited with all our Long Island Representatives: Laura Gillen, Tom Suozzi, Nick LaLota and Andrew Gar-
barino along with Tim Kennedy from Buffalo. Students from all five New York dental schools were in
attendance as well. They were advocating for the following three issues that directly affect those in
practice, dental students and the public.
Ensure Fair Dental Insurance Practices: The Dental and Optometric Care
(DOC) Act - This bill would prevent dental and vision plans from requiring
providers to accept fees for non-covered services. This bill would prevent
insurers from classifying non-covered services as “covered,” allow contract
extensions beyond two years only with provider permission and prohibits
restricting providers choice of labs or suppliers.
Supporting Dental Residents: The Resident Education Deferred Interest
(REDI) Act - This bill would ensure medical and dental residents qualify for an
interest-free deferment on payment for their student loans until after resi-
                                       dency is completed.

Understanding Community Water Fluoridation: The Importance of
Rigorous Research - This is an appropriations request asking the National
Institutes of Health (NIH) to conduct a study regarding low levels of fluoride
         Dr. Shreck with Rep. Brian Babin, DDS;
1 of 3 ADA members in Congress exposure and IQ. This is to combat the flawed 2024 National Toxicology
Program report that has created many false and misleading claims about
                                       fluoride.
