Parades and Thunder
and Cheers, Oh My!
onking horns, cheering, and terms of endearment filled the atmosphere near the Arizona State Veteran
HHome - Phoenix as they hosted two days of parades for their residents. Family members, volunteers and
loved ones decorated their vehicles to drive through the parking lot of ASVH-Phoenix. Due to COVID-19, the
Arizona Department of Veterans’ Services restricted visitation. The parades were the first time the families and
residents have seen each other since March.
During the second day of the parade, Grand Canyon University’s mascot, Thunder, kicked off the event,
leading the parade of vehicles as they drove by the crowd of residents and staff members. Residents had the
opportunity to make signs of their own to show their loved ones as they passed them during the parade.
GCU’s Canyon 49 Grill also provided lunch for staff members at ASVH-Phoenix to honor their service in
caring for Arizona’s veterans. They served boxed lunches and distributed hats, face masks and other items to
residents and staff. This year marks 10 years of GCU supporting the residents and staff at the ASVH-Phoenix.
ASVH-Phoenix will continue to limit visitation to the facility for the foreseeable future. The safety and
wellbeing of the residents and staff continues to be the number one priority.
