She waits in the shadows of the demanding dog. She’s almost
always in the right place at the right time. She accepts that
the demanding dog needs more of me. She rarely has to be
asked more than once to perform or to complete a command.
She often gets overrun by the demanding dog. She’s lost
many treats and snacks to the demanding dog. And still, she
turns her deep brown soulful eyes to me, totally full of love.
She waits patiently for her turn.

And when her turn comes, she starts to show a different side
of her personality. There is a freedom in her that wasn’t there
before. She suddenly has a voice. Suddenly she wants to be
closer to me and knows she won’t get pushed aside by the
demanding dog.

She doesn’t become the
demanding dog now,
because that isn’t her
way. She just wants to
be closer, to not be in
the shadows.

Never forget the dog
that hangs back, the
easy dog. They are full
of love and loyalty and
they deserve so much
love and attention, even
if they don’t ask for it.
