The path to discovery
As the Faculty of Science enters a new academic year, we do so without the
exemplary leadership of Malcolm Butler. For seven years, Dean Butler expertly
led the faculty, developing the Bachelor of Health Sciences program and
spearheading the construction of the new Health Sciences building. Under his
leadership, the faculty established strong research partnerships and enhanced its
engagement with the local community.
While it is always difficult to imagine how we will manage without people
we have come to rely on, we know from past experience that change, while
challenging, sets the stage for new opportunities and growth. So we move forward
with a search for a new dean, one who will both build on the excellent work of
Dean Butler and his predecessors and leave his or her own mark on the faculty.
Carleton’s strength in science, in fact, is a result of continued change. New faculty
bring new expertise and insights; new students bring new questions and push for
new discoveries; new administration brings new ideas and energy. But this progress
is only possible because of the achievements of those who came before.
This issue of Eureka! showcases the work of Carleton’s particle physicists, who

The story of SNOLAB — a research facility that continues to re-invent itself
Interim Dean, Faculty of Science with each successive generation of researchers — is an example of how one
scientific achievement can lead to additional questions, paving the way for
further discovery. As a result, it’s a story that spans a long period of time, with
many characters, from David Sinclair, who played a pivotal role in the creation of
the original SNO experiment and the breakthrough discovery that neutrinos have Photo:
mass, to Mark Boulay, who currently leads a project searching for dark matter,
one of the biggest mysteries in the universe.
