Mobile Phones
Students will retain possession of their devices throughout the school day at Millfield. However, there are specific areas and
times where they are not to use mobile phones as we want students to engage with one another on a personal level in an
environment that promotes social interaction. iPads remain the working tool of our students and again, we will ensure that
students understand expectations with regards to responsible digital use whilst at Millfield.
The site is separated into 2 distinct areas. The No Phone Zone is a working environment where students are taught and
behaviour for learning is the priority, whilst promoting social interaction. Mobile Device limitations apply in this area. iPads are
used as “working devices” and as such mobile phones should not be seen or heard, unless used for the purposes of accessing
the Millfield App on request or 2-Factor Authentication.
Outside of the No Phone Zone, House Zone; there are more flexible parameters for students to adhere to. House rules on
mobile devices still apply in the evening but there is greater degree of access.
This is clearly designed to have a designated area of learning where students can transition into and simulate that of entering a
working environment and the relevant expectations.
No Phone Zones will be clearly marked by signs that are erected at each entry point to the main school site. These signs are
clearly visible, and phones must be silenced and not seen once passions past these points.
Sanctions for Mobile Phones: If students are found using phones or phones are out in the no=phone zone it will result in an
immediate issuing of a Level 4 Detention and confiscation of the mobile device. Phones can be collected from the general
office after 15:45 (12:30 Wednesday & Saturday).
The sanction will increase to a Level 5 if students are in breach of the policy twice in one half term period and raise to a Head
rd
of Section / Head of Year letter home if found in breach of the policy on a 3 occasion.
Sixth Form Sanctions: Sanctions for misuse: If a student is found using mobile or smart technology/earphones in breach of this
policy, they will have their privileges removed for the remainder of the day. Phones will be confiscated and delivered to Sixth
Form Office where they will be logged, and they can collect at the end of the day and sign out.
Students will be issued with a Level 4 detention. If there is a second offence it will be escalated to a Level 5. Persistent offences
escalated by HOY/HOS.
Accessing any inappropriate material (gaming, streaming, messaging) on iPad during the school day will also result in a Level 4
detention and the same escalation applies as above.
