DRAMA
OPTION OPTION
COURSE CONTENT GCSE Drama provides the opportunity to explore dramatic techniques, to develop
performance skills and to study the art of theatre making. The course encourages
creativity, focusing on practical work which reflects twenty-first century theatre
practice and developing skills that will support progression to further study of
drama and a wide range of other subjects. We also offer a Theatre Design pathway
for students wishing to learn and create costume, set, lighting and sound. Drama is
widely recognised as a positive qualification by universities and employers.
Throughout the course, students will be challenged and inspired to develop
interpersonal skills, presentation techniques and collaborative abilities. They will
learn how to unlock their own fabulous creative potential as performer, director and
designer!
APPROACH TO TEACHING Dramatic practice and theory are integrated in a mix of practical and
AND LEARNING classroom-based sessions throughout the two years. Written analysis of play texts is
enhanced through practical exploration, with creative workshops serving to build a
secure understanding of theatre techniques, skills and understanding. The study of
devised theatre is inspired by current theatre practice and performance pieces are
created with our Director in Residence, providing valuable insight and experience of
professional theatre. Collaborative, analytical and presentation skills are enhanced
through the detailed study of vocal and physical expression, supporting the
development of key communication skills. GCSE Drama students have access to
several drama and dance studios, including the fully equipped Meyer Theatre.
ASSESSMENT 40% Internally assessed
In Component 1, you will learn how to devise and perform an original piece of
theatre, and how to analyse and evaluate the devising process and performance.
The teaching team awards marks for this component, subject to external
moderation.
60% Externally assessed
Component 2 requires you to perform two extracts from a play. The quality of your
performance is assessed by a visiting examiner. Component 3 is a written exam, in
which you will have to write about their practical exploration of a play, as well as
writing a review of one of the many pieces of live theatre seen during the GCSE
course.
FURTHER INFORMATION To study Drama is to study what it is to be human. It is a subject which helps
students to improve their understanding of themselves and the world in which they
live, providing an opportunity to find their own creative voice. Drama is also
enormous fun and it offers fantastic challenges. To cope with the demands of the
course, you need to have a genuine enthusiasm for theatre and must be willing to
actively participate in all practical sessions, which can at times be physically
demanding. You learn to be a good collaborator, demonstrating sensitivity towards
those with whom you work. It is our aim that through participation in the course,
students will develop an engagement with, and critical understanding of
performance arts.
