COMPUTER SCIENCE
OPTION OPTION
COURSE CONTENT Computer Science is all about problem solving. Computers are simply tools we use
to solve problems more quickly than humans. In this course, students will consider a
broad range of computer applications, to provide an understanding not only of the
power, versatility and the benefits of using computers, but also the limitations and
potential disadvantages.
Students will learn how computers work, how they are designed and programmed,
and how they can be used to create products and solutions. Binary, logic, hardware
and software are all covered in the theory unit. It also offers the opportunity to look
at emerging technologies including digital currency and robotics. The practical unit
involves the study of and development of algorithms for solving problems, as well
as working with the Python programming language.
Computer Science is an area which is expanding rapidly, offering a diverse range of
career opportunities in the public and private sectors. The course also forms a firm
foundation for those students thinking of studying Computer Science at A level and
beyond.
APPROACH TO TEACHING This is a very hands-on course. Students will spend much of their time in lessons
AND LEARNING developing their programming skills through exercises and small projects. Theory
lessons are more conventional and generally assessed through written questions.
ASSESSMENT Assessment is by written examination, which consists of:
• Paper 1: Theory
• Paper 2: Problem Solving and Programming
FURTHER INFORMATION This course provides students with one 9-1 IGCSE grade.
