BTEC SCIENCE

            CORE

COURSE CONTENT This course covers all the core Biology, Chemistry and Physics topics that students
need to know about to make sense of the world around them. Students
demonstrate their learning via the completion of one 60-minute written
examination and ten written assignments. As such, this course is ideal for students
who prefer to demonstrate their learning via the completion of assignments, rather
than via the completion of written examinations at the end of Year 11.

APPROACH TO TEACHING Each BTEC Science group is taught by a highly experienced and dedicated teacher,
AND LEARNING who has the overview of the progress and attainment of all the students in their
group. During the course, students will experience a mixture of practical and theory
lessons. Students will not just be taught the content that they need to master to
achieve success in their examination and assignments, but also the techniques and
skills required to really show off their ability. Student learning will be linked to real
life situations wherever possible, with technology also being used regularly to
                                               support student learning.

ASSESSMENT This course is made up of four equally weighted units:
Unit 1 – Principles of Science
Unit 2 – Chemistry and Our Earth
Unit 3 – Energy and Our Universe
Unit 4 – Biology and Our Environment
Unit 1 is assessed via a 60-minute external examination. Students sit this
examination in the Summer Term of Year 10, with a re-take opportunity in the
                                               Spring Term of Year 11.
Units 2, 3 and 4 are assessed via assignments, which students complete over the
course of Years 10 and 11. There are three Biology assignments, four Chemistry
assignments, and three Physics assignments that all students must complete.

FURTHER INFORMATION This course provides students with one BTEC Science grade. The available grades are
Distinction*, Distinction, Merit, Level 2 Pass, and Level 1 Pass. Studying this course
is not considered to be adequate preparation for studying any A level Science course
in the Sixth Form at Millfield.
