COURSE CONTENT There are three key strands of IGCSE Mathematics: Number and Algebra; Shape,
Space and Measure and Handling Data. Aspects of these are taught and developed
throughout the course. The aims of the course are to enable students to:
                                               • Develop their knowledge and understanding of mathematical concepts and
                                                techniques.
                                               • Acquire a foundation of mathematical skills for further study in the subject or
                                                related areas.
                                               • Enjoy using and applying mathematical techniques and concepts, and become
confident in using mathematics to solve problems.
                                               • Appreciate the importance of mathematics in society, employment and study.
                                               • Gain in confidence to apply mathematical skills to other subjects.

APPROACH TO TEACHING The IGCSE builds upon the knowledge and skills developed in previous years and
AND LEARNING teachers will use a variety of teaching and learning techniques to help students
develop. These will include a mixture of traditional instruction, investigative tasks,
group and collective activities and independent study. Students are expected to
apply themselves fully to all activities and to show a willingness to learn and
develop, regardless of their prior attainment. The department work collectively to
support students and members of staff are available to offer additional guidance
during lunchtime workshops or at other times by arrangement.

ASSESSMENT The qualification is assessed through two written papers at the end of the course; a
calculator is permitted for both papers. The grades achievable range from 9 – 1.

FURTHER INFORMATION Our accelerated sets also work towards a free standing qualification in Additional
Mathematics and take exams for both qualifications at the end of that year. It is
expected that a student taking the Additional Mathematics exam is performing at
the highest level in their IGCSE studies.
The Additional Mathematics qualification is a free standing qualification (not a
GCSE). The maximum grade achievable is an A.
