ENGLISH LANGUAGE
& ENGLISH LITERATURE
CORE CORE
COURSE CONTENT All students, except some of those studying English as an Additional Language, will
take IGCSE English Language and most will also take English Literature in a
combined course. English at IGCSE involves the development of skills in the four
strands of communication: reading, writing, speaking and listening. This course will
focus on:
• Reading widely, including fiction and non-fiction, poetry and plays.
• Writing for a broad range of purposes and in a variety of modes.
• Speaking confidently and fluently.
APPROACH TO TEACHING At IGCSE level you will be taught both Language and Literature within the same
AND LEARNING timetable and by the same teacher. Skills such as essay writing and analysis of
various styles of writing form an important part of the course. You will study an
exciting range of material (all designed to make you a better reader, writer, speaker
and listener), including creative writing, writing for specific audiences and purposes,
drama, prose fiction and poetry. Discussion and debate are important elements of
the lessons; we want our students to arrive at their own conclusions, and express
their views convincingly.
ASSESSMENT The course is assessed through a combination of coursework and exams.

FURTHER INFORMATION As one of the core subjects, a good grade in English is an essential entry
requirement for any subsequent higher education course. More importantly, good
skills in English are transferable far beyond the classroom. The ability to
communicate effectively is an invaluable life skill. The IGCSE English course is more
than just a qualification and its importance should not be underestimated.
