BUSINESS

COURSE CONTENT The GCSE in Business is exciting and fast moving, investigating the way businesses
start and operate to satisfy customers and generate profits for investors. The
programme begins with a study of enterprise and entrepreneurship whereby
students are given opportunities to practise their own business decision making in a
variety of simulated business situations. Students readily move into spotting gaps in
the market and putting their ideas towards the development of marketing decisions.
The subject is so popular as we are constantly bringing the subject to life and
teaching about the ever-changing business world in which we live. Business is
engaging and inspiring which reflects the demands of a truly modem and evolving
business environment which sparks the students’ imagination and generates their
commercial thinking as they continue to study the curriculum.
APPROACH TO TEACHING Lessons are engaging and brought to life by the continuous use of business news to
AND LEARNING help underpin the topics being taught, e.g. company takeovers or the launch of a
new product. This enables the lessons to be kept lively and relevant to what is
happening in the business world. We encourage active participation in lessons
whereby student led learning is essential through which invaluable skills such as
discussion, leadership and interpersonal skills are learnt. There is strong emphasis
on examination skills which are continuously developed through our assessment
programme and excellent feedback opportunities which our extremely experienced
teachers can provide. The Business department’s delivery is underpinned with the
latest research-based evidence to ensure every student makes good progress.
Students will be able to study and discuss major business decisions that are taking
place in real companies and gain an understanding of the responsibilities involved in
driving small and large businesses. We also incorporate several enrichment activities
into the course such as Tycoons in School competition, the Coca-Cola Real Business
Challenge, the student investor challenge, alongside local trips and additional guest
speakers.
Business is a subject which requires curiosity for how the business world operates
and what impact businesses have on the environment. We are looking for students
with passion and enthusiasm to find answers to: how do I set up a business? What
are the latest innovations in the market place? How do I respond to new
competitors entering the crowded market?
ASSESSMENT This course is assessed through two final written exams at the end of Year 11.
There is no coursework in GCSE Business.
FURTHER INFORMATION GCSE Business provides an excellent pathway into studying the subject for A level
as it provides a broad programme of study which many students often look for in
