               Peterson’s journey on the road to psychology started with a trip as a young man to

               Auschwitz. During his time in Poland he became plagued by the trauma and echo of

               the true evil and destruction that had taken place during the Holocaust. He describes

               how he became obsessed with this topic, often suffering nightmares and sleepless

               nights. Why?



               In Jungian terms, the Shadow is described as being the unconscious aspect of the

               personality which the conscious ego does not identify in itself. Not only was he being

               confronted with the Shadow in respect to his own life, but Auschwitz was evidence of

               the Shadow unleashing its destructive power en Masse. Somewhere between 10-20


               million  people  died  in  concentration  camps  and  anywhere  between  70-85  million

               people died during World War 2, approximately 3% of the world's population at the

               time.



               It is hard for us to comprehend that such a large scale atrocity took place on earth less

               than 100 years ago and these types of atrocities continue to take place today all over

               the world.



               How is it that we can end up in such a dilemma? In such a bloodbath of chaos?



               Peterson suggests that we land ourselves in these dilemma’s through avoiding our


               Shadow. Much like a blind spot in a vehicle when changing lanes, one must always
