Sometimes I look at all the amazing things the staff and mem-
bers accomplish in just a few months and say to myself “Did we
do all of that just since April?!!” After opening our major exhibit
The Science of Surfing, we also opened a mini-exhibit at the
San Diego County Fair in Del Mar. It was a huge hit, seen by
tens of thousands of visitors.
The Education Committee’s A.R. Gurrey Jr. Photo
Competition for students was produced by Board member Tom Gibbons with
great help from high school teachers Justin Moodie and Peter McBride and
many more. CSM hosted the awards ceremony for the winners who came from
all over San Diego County. We also hosted two forums for teachers and school
board members to develop more field trips and educational integration to our
already robust visitor program.
Sunset magazine, the San Diego Union Tribune, the Orange County
Register, PBS, Ocean magazine and the Channel 9 News all featured CSM in
the recent month or two. We partnered with the fabulous Visit Oceanside crew
for a great International Surf Day at the Pier, and screened the lifeguard saga,
Big Wave Guardians to a cheering crowd of North County residents. Local
media partner KOCT produced a Public Service Announcement (PSA) for us
with legendary surf photographer Jeff Divine which runs in all the San Diego
markets. CSM also produced a short video about the museum in conjunction
with KOCT.
Author and Hawaiian surf observer Mindy Pennybacker was invited to a
book signing for her newest work Surfing Sisterhood Hawaii. And in July
we premiered the first ever screening of an amazing film of the first first Duke
Kahanamoku Invitational 1965 Surf Contest with guest speaker and storied
film archivist and lensman Ira Opper. We’ve been busy as you can see!
That’s why we need your support. Donate, renew your membership, volunteer,
become a member, write a review and make the museum the best public place
to come and enjoy. Help us by joining the line-up! With much Aloha...JK

On behalf of the Board of Directors, staff, Museum members, and surfers across
San Diego, the California Surf Museum would like to thank Mike Burner for his
service to both CSM and to the San Diego surf community at large. One of our most
well-revered board members for more than two decades, Mike was an original (OG)
member of the Windansea Surf Club and a die-hard surfer his entire life. As a surfer,
fire captain, family man and friend Mike has earned admiration from all who know him.
He served as the project director of the construction and development of the current
museum locale at 312 Pier View Way when we partnered with the City of Oceanside
to move CSM into our present address. His level-headed and consistent efforts
and his tireless attention to the integral procedure and process has been invaluable.
Mike’s help with grant funding, budget oversight, fiscal management, was key to us
moving ahead over the last few years. The California Surf Museum would not be
where it is today (literally!) without him. And although he will be stepping down from
his valued post, we appreciate that in every one of the many areas Mike was involved
in he served with integrity, thoroughness, and excellence. Plus, as anyone who knows
him will tell you, he’s a heck of a lot of fun! His presence on the BOD will be sorely
missed, but we know Mike will be working every way he can, continuing to assist the
entity he loves. So not goodbye, but rather a huge ovation of gratitude for your service.
