DONATIONS
DON
Jaw Dropping Donation
Vietnam veteran and CSM
member Steve Brown (L and far R)
stopped by in early June and dropped
off a check for $5000.
“I am happy for what you do, and
I want to make sure the museum
keeps going.”
Steve was a featured personality
in our China Beach exhibit in 2017.
A passionate surfer from south
San Diego County, he was wounded
while on helicopter duty in Vietnam. When he was in Cam Ranh Bay recovering from a serious leg wound, he saw
a few surfboards next to the lifeguard station at the nearby beach. “I had to beg the guards for a board, mainly
because my leg was still bandaged and I was hobbling. But they finally gave in. I paddled through 5-foot surf,
went all the way outside, caught one wave and rode it cleanly all the way back to the sand. The guys who were
watching were blown away and that sweet session brought some much-needed sanity to me. It was just what I
needed. Thank you, Steve, for your service, and much-appreciated donation!
Big Wave Survival Suit
John Federoff (R) donated
this Garrett McNamara prototype
survival wetsuit in late April. It was
made by Body Glove more than
eight years ago, specifically for big-
wave charger Garrett McNamara.
The suit featured what was, at that
point, the latest advancements in
built-in survival paraphernalia.
(Right)...Garrett “GMAC”
McNamara, an American pro
surfer, is probably best known for
setting the world record for largest
wave ever surfed, as documented
in the HBO series 100 Foot Wave.
McNamara is also known for
taming a monstrous barrel at Jaws,
and being the first person ever to ride a wave formed by calving glaciers.
A big shout-out to the crew at Hansen Surfboards for loaning CSM the display mannequin.
‘Donating His Time!’
(at Right..) CSM’s newest volunteer is
Sam Kobari, who teaches Anthropology at SDSU and
is part of their Surf/Skate Coalition.
Sam is a regular Monday morning extra hand, at
times acting as docent or lending a hand with projects
as needed.
On this occasion he is describing the shaping
process in the Science of Surfing display to a family
of visitors
