*On a historic note: The Education Committee chose to name the
contest after pioneer surf photographer A.R Gurrey, Jr., who is
considered by many to be the father of surf photography.
In the early 20th century, Gurrey, an art-lover and surfer living in
Waikiki, dedicated himself to taking pictures of the locals gliding gracefully
across the waves.
In 1914 he compiled and published a slim booklet of his dramatic,
unique images, The Surf Riders of Hawaii, only a handful of which
survive today.

“Get Out There” was the
theme for this year’s
San Diego County Fair,
and the CSM team constructed a display that
showcased the many ways that surfers enjoy getting
out there.
From bodysurfing to adaptive surfing - and every-
thing in between - the month-long display celebrated
the benefits of participating in one of the world’s most
exhilarating activities!
