            BIG WEDNESDAY DELIVERED
               (as promised!) by Jeff Duclos
Just as the term “Big Wednesday” came along
as a prediction that the best swells will arrive on a
Wednesday, the appearance of special guest, surfing
icon and entrepreneur Joey Cabell, at CSM’s March
15th “Big Wednesday” event signaled an evening
worthy of the sold-out crowd it generated.
It was a night of many highlights. Joining Joey on
stage to “talk story” was his lifelong friend Paul Strauch
Jr., who also, along with Joey, is considered one of
most influential surfers in the 60s era.
In a surprise announcement by the evening’s host,
Museum Board of Director’s President Jim
Kempton, those in attendance learned that Joey and
Paul, along with Fred Hemmings and Butch Van (Above)...Joey was given a traditional lei greeting by
Artsdalen (posthumously) – had been named the Jericho Poppler
Museum’s 2023 recipients of its “Silver Surfer Award.”
This lifetime achievement award is presented
annually to surfers who have made significant
contributions to the culture and lifestyle of the surfing
community. These four surfing greats are being
recognized as the charter members of the
      1966 Duke Kahanamoku Surf Team.
Another much anticipated event of the evening was
the screening of the documentary “Joey Cabell —
      Beyond the Sport: Surf Legend.”
Created by Spectrum News, it was originally
conceived as a four-to-five-minute news feature.
Given the charisma and rich history of the subject
matter as surfer, world-class sailor, skier and the man
who launched the famous “Chart House” restaurant (Above)...Ilima Kalama (L) and Paul Strauch, Jr.
brand, it became the full-length feature presentation
      that mesmerized the assembled crowd.
A lively question and answer period with Joey and
Paul followed, that ended perfectly with the following
statement by Joey: “In the sport of surfing, and in the
sport of life, you learn respect. It is the most beautiful
lesson that I ever had, and I got it in Waikiki from the
      local boys.”

(At left)...Joey (R) was happy to hand the mic over to

who produced the film as CSM President, Jim Kempton
                                                                looks on.
