DATA THEFT- THE NEW 21ST CENTURY CRIME

Around 100 finance professionals, in senior positions and stake holders in various businesses and
organisations across Qatar attended the event. Rupalakshmi Setty, Chairperson Doha chapter of
ICAI, welcomed the chapter members, and in her opening remarks mentioned that if the data was
the new oil, there would be gigantic oil spill all around the world. In today’s information age, the loss
or theft of data can have severe consequences, she said. Amit Desai, an expert in the data field, said
that since 2013, there had been over 9.7 billion records lost or stolen due to data breaches world
over. Quoting FBI statistics, he said the data theft was the fastest growing financial crime in the world
with an astonishing 59 attacks per second. He emphasised that the consequences of data theft could
be severe for individuals and businesses.
