We were advised that because of traffic and parking restrictions in effect
during the DNC, it was best to take the Broad Street subway to the Wells
Fargo Center. On both days of my assignment, I found a parking space near
Girls’ High, happily walked past those beloved steps on Olney Avenue, and
headed for the subway. We were told to wait for the coordinators to arrive to
escort us to our posts inside the Wells Fargo Center. My excitement grew as
more yellow-shirted participants arrived. Soon it became obvious how very
diverse the volunteers were—not only by age and race, but also by
experience. As I chatted with several, I learned that a number of them had
served before at the DNC in Charlotte, NC, in 2012. One volunteer had also
been present in Denver in 2008, when Senator Barack Obama became the
nominee for President.” (View Peggy’s complete, in-depth, responses on our
website at www.ghsalumnae.org.)

Penny Glackman and Sally Groverman (Both are June 1965) both
served as volunteers. Penny sent in the following note: "We spent 3 days at
various locations involved with the PoliticalFfest 2016. We greeted people at
the Union League, the Convention Center, and the Constitution Center. We
shared information and gave directions, and enjoyed meeting people from all
over the country who were attending. We took pictures of the “Donkeys
Around Town,” met delegates from various states, and saw some protesters
from a distance. Sally helped with school groups doing arts and crafts
activities related to our presidential history, and Penny was assigned to
helping visitors whose pictures were taken coming down the steps of a
mockup of Air Force One. We attended the Philly Feast one afternoon in Old
City, had lunch by Betsy Ross' house, and enjoyed the music and
entertainment of various street performers. We also bumped into other 209
classmates, Resa Levinson and Sally Nimontyn Smith, who were also
volunteering. Thursday, I met up with Mary Cogan Frankel (June 1965)
who was volunteering with Planned Parenthood. We went to several
caucuses together, which included interesting and exciting speakers. Though
the excitement was taking place at the Wells Fargo Center, and we spent our
days in Center City, it was great to be a part of the energy in Philly during
the week."
