BORDEAUX
Bordeaux may be France’s most important region. It is the largest fine wine district in the world. The whole départment of the
Gironde, named after its most important estuary, is dedicated to wine-growing. Its production, over 6 million hectoliters, dwarfs
that of all French wine regions, except Languedoc-Roussillon. Red wines outnumber white by eight to one.
The Bordeaux region is massive with more than 120,000 hectares of vines divided into 60 different appellations. The Left Bank,
where Cabernet Sauvignon is the key grape. The Right Bank, where Merlot is the most important component and Pessac Leognon,
which is the home of the best dry white Bordeaux wines as well as several of the top red wines in the world. Sauternes, which
produces what many connoisseurs claim is the best sweet, white wines in the world.
One of the most important things to know about Bordeaux wines is that they are a blend of grape varieties. The red Bordeaux
Blend is one of the most copied around the world and it includes Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit
Verdot and Malbec.
