ABSTRACT
The study assessed the guidance leadership of school heads in managing private schools. The
school head’s leadership styles were ascertained and associated with the guidance leadership
relative to faculty, students and instruction. Identified issues and challenges were the researcher’s
bases of developing a guidance leadership program. The researcher used descriptive research
through the survey questionnaire method. Interviews with other school heads and focus group
discussions provided support to the gathered data. It was found out that servant, values-based,
visionary and affiliative leadership styles of school heads to which they anchored guidance
leadership had a high level of observance. In addition, the school head’s guidance leadership
relative to faculty, students and instruction were manifested to a great extent. The relationship
between the level of observance of leadership styles and the extent of manifestation of guidance
leadership according to the cited variables was highly significant. Major issues and challenges in
guidance leadership of school heads included lack of communication or insufficient
dissemination of information, professional development support, pressures and management
concerns. To address each of them, the researcher proposed a guidance leadership program
featuring customized guidance leadership activities. He based some of them on the experiences
and practices of the proponent as a school principal. The program sought to manage schools
more effectively.
