OVERVIEW AND HISTORY OF FOOTPRINT
Since its inception in 2013, Footprint has had a clear mission – to develop the process technologies and
materials that enable companies and their respective industries to eliminate single use plastics.
Plastics pose a tremendous environmental threat:
Over 33 million tons of plastic are dumped into
landfills annually in the U.S. alone
More than 5 trillion pieces of plastic weighing over
250,000 tons remain afloat at sea
94% of U.S. tap water is contaminated with plastic
At current rates, by 2050 there will be more plastic in
the ocean than fish by weight
Plastic infiltrates our food supply and our habitable
lands creating tremendous health risks to our
population and our planet
Even worse, despite popular belief, most plastics are not or cannot be recycled:
40% of all plastics end up in the landfill
32% of all plastics end up leaking out of the system
and pollute the environment
14% of all plastics are burned for energy
8% of all plastics are downcycled into other plastic
materials until they must eventually be thrown out
4% of all plastics are lost during down-cycling
Only 2% of plastics are recycled, with most of these
being specialized industrial uses
China’s January 2018 bans on imported waste
exacerbated these problems
With 63% of all plastic waste coming from packaging, co-founders Troy Swope (CEO) and Yoke Chung
(CTO) created Footprint to strategically focus on the packaging market with a simple, yet powerful, vision:
Eliminate Plastic, Protect the Environment.
Footprint has assembled a unique team to create, design, develop, and manufacture disruptive molded
fiber packaging solutions that are revolutionizing industries.
