Why Choose Generic Drugs?
Did you know…
• When you choose a generic equivalent over the brand name drug, you pay less
out-of-pocket
• You can expect the same results and help keep your future health care costs affordable
What is a generic drug?
• A lower cost version of the brand-name drugs
• Works like the brand-name drug in dosage, strength, performance and use
• Must meet the same quality and safety standards
All generic drugs must be reviewed and approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)
How does the FDA ensure that my generic drug is as safe and effective as the brand-name drug?
• All generic drugs are put through a rigorous, multi-step review process that includes a review of scientific data on the generic
drug’s ingredients and performance
• The FDA also conducts periodic inspections of the manufacturing plant and monitors drug quality – even after the generic
drug has been approved
Is my generic drug made by the same company that makes the brand-name drug?
• Brand-name firms are responsible for manufacturing approximately 50% of generic drugs
Are Generic drugs always made in the same kind of facilities as brand-name drugs?
• Yes! All generic drug manufacturing facilities must meet the FDA’s standards of good manufacturing practices.
• The FDA will not permit drugs to be made in substandard facilities
What is the cost to me?
• The copay for a generic prescription is $5 - $10
Why consider mail order drugs?
• If you are already taking medications regularly, the switch to mail order drugs can save you some out-of-pocket costs and
offer greater convenience
• By choosing to receive medication through the mail, you would be shipped a 3 month supply of your medication for only 1x
retail co-pay
• This means that you have fewer refills, and also lower costs out of your pocket
• In addition, you still have the same excellent service you would receive from your neighborhood pharmacy! All of your
medications are reviewed by doctors and pharmacists to uncover potential problem interactions between medicines
• And don’t worry, you still have 24/7 access to pharmacists who are trained specifically on the medications used to treat a wide
variety of conditions
• By choosing to receive your drugs through the mail, you lower your costs, receive the maximum convenience, and are left with
the peace of mind that you still have experts taking care of you
