Disability & Leave Benefits
Disability Insurance
NY Life administers all non-work-related illness or accident disability claims and family medical leave requests. Disability insurance
provides partial income replacement should you become disabled and unable to work due to a non-work-related illness or injury.
Mersen provides Short Term disability coverage at no cost to you and coverage is automatic; you do not need to enroll. When
absent for a non-work-related illness or injury, employees will contact NY Life who will coordinate your income replacement, State
leave benefits and family medical leave benefits.
Coverage Benefit
Short-Term Disability A portion of income replacement to weekly maximum depending on employment status. This
company provided benefit is up to (if approved) a maximum of 26 weeks. Some State
benefits will coordinate with NY Life for non-work-related illness or injury.
Long-Term Disability A percentage of your base salary, to a maximum of $10,000 per month if you are disabled and
are unable to work and depending on your employment status.
Benefits are offset with other sources of income, such as Social Security
and Workers’ Compensation.
Union Hourly employees must elect LTD annually to have this coverage. If you are electing for the first time during open
enrollment, you will be subject to an EOI (Evidence of Insurability). In ADP, you will be directed to the NY Life site to compete
the EOI form. Submit to HR once approval is received.
Basic Earnings for Insurance Benefits (Life, AD&D, and Disability)
Basic annual earnings are your annual base pay excluding bonuses, commissions, overtime pay, shift differential pay, or any other
fringe benefit or other compensation.
Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA)
Mersen provides Family and Medical Leave to its eligible employees (after one year and 1250 hours of employment). The company
posts the mandatory FMLA Notice and upon hire provides all new employees with notices, required by the U.S. Department of Labor
(DOL) on Employee Rights and Responsibilities under the Family and Medical Leave Act. This act was created and designed for
employees to balance their work and family life by taking unpaid, job-protected leave for specific family and medical reasons, which
allows your benefits to stay in place and guarantees reinstatement to the same or equivalent position.
Under this policy, NY Life administers all leave requests and may grant up to 12 weeks to attend to the serious health condition of the
employee, parent, spouse or child, or for the pregnancy or care of a newborn child, or for the adoption or foster care of a child (or up to
26 weeks of military caregiver leave to care for a covered service member with a serious injury or illness) during a 12-month period to
eligible employees. The leave may be paid, unpaid or a combination of paid and unpaid leave, depending on the circumstances of the
leave and as specified in this policy and State benefits. FMLA runs concurrent to any NY Life approved employee short term or long-
term disability or worker’s compensation leave. NY Life will coordinate most State leave disability and family leave benefits.
Employees are required to use any vacation or sick time prior to going unpaid for the benefits and should speak with their HR Manager
regarding their leave and any specific State leave regulations. All illness, workers compensation or non-related disability illness FMLA
requests must be submitted to NY Life.
