Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Go Pink 2018
Sanger firefighters go pink in October
Dick Sheppard/Sanger Herald
The student section at the Apache football game last Friday took the motto "Go Pink" to raise awareness of breast cancer very seriously. The pink cloud of corn starch powder at halftime of an October game is an annual tradition with Sanger High students. Many of the students wore pink to the game - and even those who didn't were pink after the corn starch powder storm.
Herald staff report
Sanger firefighters are going pink in October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, said fire chief Greg Tar- ascou.
"We all know someone who has been affected by cancer. This is a great way to show our support for women who are fighting cancer, to help raise awareness about the importance of screenings and to remind women fight- ing cancer that they are not alone," said Tarascou.
Throughout the month of October, Sanger firefighters will "Go Pink" as part of a nationwide campaign to help support women in their fight with breast cancer.
"We're asking everyone
to wear pink on Oct. 18 as a sign of support for this wor- thy cause. We're encouraging the city council and city staff to show support by wearing pink at the 6 p.m. city council

A median finally stopped this out of control car. It had come southbound around the corner on Academy by the railroad tracks so fast it careened into a curb and then into a car pulling into the parking lot at McDonald's before running head on into the median - another good reason why police are cracking down on speeders.

Early Voting for the state- wide general election began Monday, said Fresno County clerk/registrar of voters, Brandi Orth.
The main elections office, 2221 Kern Street in Fresno, will serve as a polling place, from 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m., Monday-Friday, from now through Nov. 6.
Orth also announced that vote-by-mail ballots have been mailed to voters who requested them.
“Early voting is a great opportunity for voters with busy schedules or who can- not make it to their polling place on Nov. 6. We hope voters will take advantage of this opportunity to come down to the elections office and cast their ballots. Every vote counts.” said Orth.
Voters can come into the office to pick up their ballot and take it with them or they can actually cast their vote at that time.
Additionally, voters can

Next week's Herald will have comments from each candidate for a city council

New date set to hear
appeal of planning
commission decision
By Dick Sheppard
Sanger Herald
The city council was originally scheduled to hear an appeal of a planning com- mission decision at a special meeting on Oct. 8.
Plans changed when Vincent Wall, the planning commissioner who filed the appeal, appeared before
the council at its regular meeting on Oct. 4 and told councilmembers they were not following the rules and whatever decision they made could be nullified if they held the meeting on Oct. 8.
The meeting was resched- uled for 6 p.m. on Oct. 22.
Wall, an attorney, filed the appeal with the city on Sept. 20 challenging a decision the planning commission made on Sept. 13.
A 3-1 vote by the com- mission, with Wall casting the lone dissenting vote approved a conditional use permit for Algonquin Power. Algonquin is a Sanger based
company that uses gas to generate electricity which it provides to the power grid. Commissioners Johnny Per- ez, Ken Garcia and Monica Yamada voted to approve the permit.
The appeal, obtained
by the Herald under the California Public Records Act, contains environmental concerns mixed with obvious frustration over what Wall perceives to be misinforma- tion - and a lack of timely, useful and relevant informa- tion - from the city staff.
Wall told the council at its Oct. 8 meeting that it had not given the commission an opportunity to submit a report or send a representa- tive to the appeals hearing, as required, because neither issue was on the commission agenda at its Sept. 27 meet- ing, its final meeting before the appeal hearing.
