Central & Wessex Region Teambuilding – Wadworth Brewery
LCpl Walton RADC
At last, the time had come for Central and Wessex to break free for a visit to the local brewery! We all headed to the town of Devizes to have a nosey around the Wadworth Brewery Visitors Centre.
Upon arrival we were given our PPE for the day, because it had to feel a bit like work somehow, in the form of High Vis Vests.
To start with we were given a well versed Introduction in the Harness Bar Room;
we were told the story of how the brewery came to be where it is today from its small beginnings in 1855. We were sadly informed that the resident shire horses weren’t on site today as they were at a local show. Much to our surprise the shire horses are still being used today to deliver the beer to the local area, so they deserve a Friday off for once.
During our tour we were shown everything from the sign painting side of the business, which was likened to the painting of the Brooklyn Bridge, all the way through to the brewing process old and new.
After all the strong smells and aromas throughout the tour, which actually sent one of our team members ill and having
to leave, we were ready for business - the tasting! And boy did we get to taste – they had 7 beers on tap and we got a third of a pint of each. Though, for those of us who were driving or didn’t like those beers with more of an acquired taste, we had our resident extremely eager helpers at hand. Cpl Nyalemegbe and SAC Reeves quickly gained their position at the bar, and began to sweep up the left overs and then some.
Finally we all made our rounds in the gift shop, said our farewells, and, with a fairly new team here at MOD Lyneham, we were all happy to put names to faces.
Until next time...
