leave training cycle. Beginning with Ex Elephant’s Fury on Feldom ranges, the Guards enjoyed a week of training seri- als on Jackal. By the end of the week, the entire Squadron had rehearsed casualty drills, contact drills and vehicle move- ment, culminating in a road move through the Dales back to Gaza Barracks.
Next, the regiment moved down to Castle Martin to cycle through its mounted and dismounted ranges, and this allowed B Squadron to conduct their dismounted Ex Elephant’s Hide in Brecon. Some nota-

ble episodes came away from this period, not least an OP that was found to have been dug directly above a natural spring, to the dismay of the already sodden and exhausted soldiers who were expected to inhabit it.
This three-week period proved a rare opportunity to have the whole regiment away together and the weekends were given over to inter-squadron sports. The Guards fielded both a rugby and football team and in true North Eastern style showed sport- ing fervour in the latter. However, despite

the best efforts of one or two egg chasers, the rugby team left much to be desired, finishing dead last. This has since been accredited to the uninspiring performance from the resident Kiwi, Lt Ellis.
B Squadron’s energies have not simply been dedicated to green soldiering, how- ever. Cpl Atkinson winning the RAC mid- dle-weight boxing championship down at Bovington was a source of true squadron pride.
