Installation of Sensors for On-line Detection of Stator Partial Discharges (PD)
on Existing Motors rated 3.3kV and above Operating in Zones Classified as
Explosive
Introduction
Often Customers/Plant Managers are asked to install on medium and high voltage motors, which are
already operating in zones classified as explosive, a predictive diagnostic system for measuring on-
line (i.e. during the normal service of the motor) partial discharges (PD) from stator windings.
This Technical Note aims at giving useful guidelines in compliance with current regulations and
standards, and particularly with the reference document regarding all relevant processes, i.e. IEC or
EN 60079-19 Standard "Explosive Atmospheres Part 19: Equipment Repair, Overhaul and
Reclamation" (published 2012-04).
The Standard is not to be applied only for maintenance, except when repairing and overhauling
interventions cannot be distinguished from maintenance. Also it offers no suggestion about cable entry
devices, which sometimes have to be replaced when a motor is reinstalled (not applicable to
protection categories "m", "o" and "p").
The above EN Standard replaces the former EN Standard 60079-19:2008-10, whose validity has
expired on January 01, 2014.
