100 Reflections that Crafted Geneva International

"Transnational business is today а basic repository of power on the planet-
wide scale. As such, it must bе more closely associated with international
decisions. But at the same time, it must agree to include in its economic
strategies considerations of the general interest and collective well-being."

20. In practical terms it means that there is а need to set up an effective
organizational mechanism of interaction between the UN and the business
community. Until recently the only example of an organizational structure to
facilitate contacts between the UN and the business community was the New
York Business Council for the UN. This body primarily organizes meetings
between corporate chief executives and the UN senior officials. Recently, а
similar structure, which is called the European Business Council for the United
Nations, was set up in Europe. As far as I know, its office will be opened soon in
Geneva, where most of the European-based UN agencies are located.
Potentially this kind of organization could do а lot of useful things. It can
facilitate contacts between businessmen, diplomats and politicians, including
the highest level officials. Heads of States and Governments often visit Geneva
and many have expressed their interest in meetings with the business
community. It could also encourage private support of the UN development
and other projects in various fields, including protection of human rights,
assistance to the refugees, etc.

21. The UN Office at Geneva has а long experience of close cooperation
with the non-governmental organizations. Though is seems to me that the term
"non­governmental organization" is somewhat misleading. This is а definition
through negation. It is approximately the same as to call а Women's League а
"non-men" organization. I would prefer another name "citizens' organization"
which better reflects the essence of their activities.

22. Many of those who are united bу this type of organization are very
special people. They are the most enlightened, the most altruistic and the most
concerned about the future of our planet. They are the consciousness of
mankind and their support is of crucial importance for the United Nations.
Only together can we build а better world based on the lofty aims and
principles of the UN Charter.
