Dear President,
Dear Friends,

1. It is а great honour for mе to address the members of the Lions Clubs

International. Precisely two years ago I already enjoyed this pleasure.
Now 1 have а chance to meet you again and to continue our friendly
dialogue. However, our meeting today is of particular importance to me
because of the other reasons: the Golden Anniversary of the United Nations,
which will be commemorated this year.

2. It needs to bе said that the UN is quite serious about its 50th
Anniversary. The intention is not to mark this event just with festivities. The
World Organization is evaluating the experience of half а century of its
existence and is setting priorities for the future.

3. То the Geneva-based UN bodies, the 50th Anniversary also gives the
opportunity to re-examine and readjust its activities to the new dimension of
the promotion of реасе, development and democratization. As the second
largest centre in the United Nations system after New York - Geneva is
