THE EAST FERNERY
`Fernery about 32ft long, arranged with
ornamental rockwork’. [1902, Sales

This occupies an exactly similar
position as the west fernery, out of
direct sunlight and in the shadow of
the tall back wall of the east Vinery. Its IMG_1387.JPG
internal measurements are 9.3m [30ft

6in] long by 2.75m [9ft] wide. No
rockwork has survived. There are 2
concrete tank like structures built
against the back wall which may have
been beds for the ferns. There is a fine The East Fernery
section of cast iron staging along the
north side. It was entered by a doorway
from the south east conservatory, a
further doorway led into the vinery Some of the original cast iron displlay shelves from other greenhouses are stored here.

This chamber is entered down steps
adjacent to the wall of the east fernery.
Its floor is 2.15m [7ft] below the ground
level above. The steps are surrounded
by ornamental railings with a fleur de
lys rnotiv. The chamber measures
5.65m [18ft 6 in] long by 3.20m [10ft 6in]
broad. Its ceiling has 2 different
construction techniques. The south
part which is underneath the fernery is
vaulted while the remaining part below

from concrete supported by iron joists.
The east wall which it shares with the
boiler house on the other side and
which has the same floor level, has a

brick relieving arch. A 4 inch water pipe
goes through the wall into the Boiler
House. Some other hot water pipes are
observable. Two 4 inch pipes at the
north east corner go towards the floor
of the east lean-to vinery. There are
other pipes going in other directions.
