The Palm House
The stone pathway around the central bed is deteriorating particularly on the western

side. Some grilles are intact and some original cast iron material remains in situ.
The beds have been covered with gravel that may conceal more authentic material.

`Palm House, about 34ft 6in by 23ft’.
[1902, Sales Particulars].
The Palm House bed is 8.55[29ft] long
and 3.20m [loft 6in] wide and is
considerably lower than that of the Fig
House being only 0.46m [lft 8in] high.
The overall external length of the east
range is 19.85m [65ft] and its width is
7m [23ft]. The Palm House is described
in 1905 as follows:
`In the Palm House are noticed healthy
specimens of Kentia belmoreana and K.
Fosteriana, Phoenix rupicola and P.
reclinata, latinia borbonica, Entferpe
edulus, etc. Whilst the side stages were
well furnished with such subjects as
Hippeastrums, Oracaenas, small Palms,
Large, well-flowered specimens of
Cypripedium insigne, etc.
