THE BANANA HOUSE
`The Banana House about 60ft by 23ft
planted with fine specimen banana
trees bearing excellent fruit’ (1902
Sales Particulars).
The Banana House is now totally
overgrown and in need of clearance for
proper investigation. Of the original

house only the base remains. The
plants grew in a central brick built bed
which was later used, after the
glasshouse was dismantled, as the
base for a glasshouse with Dutch barn
type iron framing, for growing
tomatoes. The framing of this is still
standing. The house was entered
through doorways on the north and
south sides from the corner
conservatories. A small portion of cast
iron staging remains at the north west
corner but appears to have gone

elsewhere. The central bed was last
used for growing seedling cabbages
and strawberries [information, John
Joyce]. The house measures 19.85m
[65ft] by 7m [23ft 6 inches]. The article
in the Garden Chronicle [1905] gives a
very full description of the contents of
the house.
`The Banana House which measures
72ft by 26ft is well stocked with healthy
plants of the ordinary variety Musa
Cavedistu.” The plants were fruiting
freely. The rafters were furnished with
such subjects as Clereodendron,
Balfourianum, Cissus discolour,
Bigonia President Carnot, several
varieties of single and double Hibiscus,
Allemandes, etc., whilst the side stages
contained in miscellaneous collection
of stove plants’.
