2. Environmental Impacts of the Fashion Industry
The fashion industry places a huge burden on the global environment through
carbon emissions, water consumption, chemical pollution and waste production.
Textile dyeing and finishing processes especially pollute water resources; Synthetic
fibers cause microplastic pollution. To reduce these impacts, change is required in
both production processes and consumption patterns.
• Carbon footprint: The sector accounts for approximately 10% of global emissions.
• Water pollution: Dyeing operations affect freshwater resources.
• Microplastics: Synthetic fibers are scattered into the environment during washing.
Domain Example (Traditional) Sustainable
Approach
Carbon High emissions - Local production,
remote logistics renewable energy
Water High water use and Water saving
pollution technologies, closed
circuit systems
Information Box: The fashion industry is among the sectors that
pollute approximately 20% of the world's fresh water resources.
