The previous album had a lot of lyrics that
were linked with the First World War. Does
this album have a similar running lyrical
theme?
Yeah, putting an album out in 2018, it seemed an
Unavoidable reference, given the things we’re
Preoccupied with and often find ourselves talking
about. For Endarkenment, there wasn’t a conscious
theme as we were writing, but it kind of emerged. And
when w e stood back and gave some thought to what to
call the album, it struck me that the themes and ideas
Involved in the song Endarkenment kind of ran through
The album. Not in every song or like an intentional

Necessarily realized were related until stepping back a
bit. Essentially it means the tendency, which I think is
Increasing, and has been for the past few years,
to turn away from Enlightenment values like
rationalism and objectivity. The way people relate to
one another now seems less to be about communicating
information and more about expressing feelings. So
for example in the Brexit debate, it didn’t really matter
what information was part of the debate, nobody was
going to change their position because information

your ears and shouting ‘blah blah blah I don’t care what
you think!’. And on the other side, anti-EU rancour over
neoliberalism and the treatment of Greece a few years
earlier, for example, were entirely forgotten, and good
reasons to be unsure – not the shit the foghorns and
the same mechanism, it became clear, lay behind the car crash of US politics, it was present dog whistle cunts came out with, but actual reasons

have been darkening in general – environmental catastrophes like the fires in Australia and just one example of one area where the Phenomenon
California, the cold war is alive and well, in the UK we’ve seen massive corruption and overtly of endarkenment started to become clear. But once I’d
