Vardi Needs a New Home
At ten AM the car door opened, and Dan Vardi set out on a new path. A
long, discouraging and frustrating struggle ended this morning with a
happy ending. Last night we brought Dan’s harsh story, a ninety nine year
old childless holocaust survivor who lives in an Amidar apartment in sub-
human conditions, but the hardest thing for Vardi was going down the
stairs from the third floor. For him it’s an almost impossible effort, so he
only leaves home once a week. For five years he (has been) begging to be
moved to an apartment that’s suited for his needs and worthy of human
habitation. Thousands of good people didn’t remain indifferent. Already
yesterday many replies from people who were touched and offered help
came in. cooking, cleaning, donating furniture and money, and even host
Dan until the apartment is renovated. The public turmoil did its part. At
Amidar and the Ministry of Construction and Housing (they) watched,
Minister Galant issued a directive to move Vardi to another apartment, this
morning the exciting news came. After he danced and jumped with joy,
Dan had a tour in the new apartment, with an elevator and air conditioning
and even a view to the garden. On Sunday, he’ll finally move here, in the
hope that with time he’ll also furnish it with the help of good people.
