The End to Schnitzel at School
The Ministry of Education announces a revolution in the nutrition department today, an end to the
pitta and chocolate. New guidelines published, specify exactly what is the recommended food
composition for our children, everything according to the Ministry of Health’s directions. The sale
of sugary drinks or food will be prohibited, (like) cakes, cookies, Danish and candy. The sale of
fried food will be prohibited, fries and salty snacks for instance, and the sale of processed animal or
plant-based food will be prohibited, like hotdogs, schnitzel and kebab. And what’s allowed for sale?
Whole wheat sandwiches, with low fat cheese, humus, tahini or tuna. It should be noted that similar
guidelines regarding food have existed long ago. And still, at school cafeterias (you) can mostly
find candy. The Ministry argues that these guidelines, written after the law to supervise food quality
came into effect, “will have teeth”, and starting next school year, 2017, it will be implemented for
real. (Those) who will violate these guidelines will have to pay [monetary] fines of up to six
thousand NIS, and (those) who will supervise it will be Ministry of Education’s inspectors passing
through institutions. After the whole world, maybe now we will also realize the full meaning of
health.
