                           Uzi Chitman

Uzi Chitman (June 9th 1952 – October 17th 2004) was an Israeli singer,
composer and songwriter. From the most prominent writers in Hebrew
singing, who wrote in various styles.

Uzi Chitman was born in Givat Shmuel to Avraham and Chana Chitman,
holocaust survivors. Chitman's father was an observant cantor and his mother
was secular. Chitman grew up in a traditional-religious house, which also
viewed pluralism as an important value. Chitman's musical style was also
influenced by the pluralism of his parents' home. In his childhood he
constantly heard the melodies of the prayers in cynagogue, the records of
cantors, and at the same time pop and rock albums he'd baught, such as those
of the Beatles and The Rolling Stones and records of various musical styles
in various European languages that his parents used to buy. At age 11 he
started playing on a guitar he had asked as a gift. Chitman was a prolific
writer who dealt with different musical styles: Israeli songs, mideastern
music, pop music, children's songs, ballads, translated songs from Greek,
Chassidic religious music (such as "Adon Olam") and political songs that
deal with peace and protest.

Uzi Chitman died on October 17th 2004 as a result of a heart attack. His death
unravelled the Israeli public, since he was only 52 years old and was an
esteemed writer.

Uzi Chitman's songs that appear in this book: 'I was Born (into) the Peace'.
