future tense
6 ‫קבוצה‬-‫ תת‬,1 ‫בניין פעל‬

Moving from Infinitive Form to Future Tense

‫ֶל‬In this group we omit the infinitive form prefix , and the sound

pattern changes from E…O… to:

...O...A...

‫ֶל‬Instead of the we use prefixes corresponding to the pronouns.

As an example let’s use the verb to eat - ‫ ֶל ֱאכל‬. Follow the arrows to

find the prefixes used for each pronoun.

to eat - ‫ֶל ֱאכל‬

‫ֶל ֱאכל ← א ַכל‬

Pronoun  ‫א ַנחנּו ← נ‬ ‫היא ← ת הּוא ← י‬/ ‫* ֲאני ← (א) ַא ָתה‬
Prefix
‫א ַכל‬+‫נ‬ ‫א ַכל‬+‫י‬ ‫א ַכל‬+‫ת‬ ‫ֹא ַכל‬
Prefix  ‫נא ַכל‬ ‫יא ַכל‬ ‫תא ַכל‬ ‫ֹא ַכל‬

As we add the corresponding suffixes, the ‘A’ sound disappears:

Pronoun  ‫ּו‬+‫ּו ֵהם ← י‬+‫י ַא ֶתם ← ת‬+‫ַא ְת ← ת‬
Prefix & Suffix

Prefix & Suffix  ‫ּו‬+‫אכל‬+‫י‬ ‫ּו‬+‫אכל‬+‫ת‬ ‫י‬+‫אכל‬+‫ת‬
‫יאכלּו‬ ‫תאכלּו‬ ‫תאכלי‬

* Pay attention: For the first person the prefix ‫ א‬and the first root letter ‫א‬

just coincide.
