Yitzhak Navon 1921-2015

Yitzhak Navon in a speech to the nation during his term as the fifth president, things he said then, as if said
today, “It would be an illusion to assume that a day will come when we’ll all have the same political view for
alleged unity. The question isn’t whether there would be arguments amongst ourselves, but how to hold
them.” he was born in Jerusalem, a descendant of one of the most longstanding families in the city, dating
back to the seventeenth century, acquired an education in Arabic literature, Islamic culture and education. He
was the one who, as head of the division of culture at the Ministry of Education and Culture, initiated and
executed back in the sixties, a widespread campaign to teach Hebrew to adult new immigrants. One of the
heights of his presidency was the first official visit of an Israeli President to Anwar Sadat’s Egypt. Yitzhak
Navon wasn’t just a politician; Yitzhak Navon was an educated and cultural man who preserved and wrote
pieces dealing with the culture of Spain’s Jews. And today, after a long and productive life, one of the giants
in the history of the state of Israel passed away at ninety four years old. Yitzhak Navon, blessed be his
memory.
