Meir Dizengoff
Meir Dizengoff was born in Russia in 1861. When he was 44
years old, he immigrated to Israel with his wife, Zina, and he
joined the "Ahuzat Bait" association. In 1911, he became the
head of the association and when Ahuzat Bait became the city of
Tel Aviv, he became its first mayor.
Dizengoff loved Tel Aviv and he took care of it. He helped
build new houses and he had put a lot of effort in the city's
culture. Every day he rode his horse in the streets of the city, to
make sure that everything is ok. It was important for him that
there will be a joy of life in the city. Each Purim there was a
parade and Disengoff always rode on its head.
One of Disengoff's names was "The father of the city". They say
that he had a big heart and that he cared about all the people in
Tel Aviv. For example, Jacob Gluska. Jacob Gluska was a
builder and he made handcrafted building blocks. One day,
Disengoff was passing by Jacob's workplace and he saw him
working. He got off his horse, came towards him, hugged him
and said: "Tell me, when you finish paying your workers, is
there anything left for you?"
