The Declaration of Independence
The declaration of independence was in Tel Aviv, on Friday,
Hei b'Iyar, May 14th 1948, at Dizengoff's house in Rothschild
boulevards. Everybody knows about the declaration but not
everybody knows that in order to declare the establishment of
the state, it was necessary to get the consent of the new Israeli
parliament, and many of the parliament members were afraid to
vote for the declaration because they knew that after the
declaration there will be a war. Some say that only as a result of
the pressure that Ben Gurion had put on the parliament
members, the decision was confirmed with a majority of one
vote.
When the new Israeli parliament members were invited to the
declaration, they were asked to come in formal black clothes,
despite the heat. They were also asked to keep the declaration a
secret. Even then they understood that it's an important and
historical event. But when they arrived to the house on
Rothschild Boulevards, they found half of the city population
waiting for them.
In 4:00pm David Ben Gurion also arrived and everybody
listened when Ben Gurion spoke. The declaration was not typed
and Ben Gurion read it from a manuscript that he attached to an
empty parchment. Everybody signed the empty parchment and
only a few days later they wrote the declaration on it.
