Item #2 (Advanced Level)
What’s Happening in Syria?
The round of talks between the superpowers’ Foreign Ministers in Munich
(has been) focusing in recent days on the situation in Syria, but manages to
bring the level of hatred between Russia and the west higher. Despite the
hundreds of thousands of casualties in the civil war that has been going on
in Syria for years, here it becomes a pawn in a much bigger game. The
Russians act in Syria as if it was their own, and meanwhile the west settles
for denunciations. Seemingly, there is some progress; the superpowers
have been able to formulate an agreed plan for a cease-fire that will come
into effect in about one week, but it’s almost fictitious. This plan is not
agreed on by Assad, for instance, and doesn’t include the war on terror
organization such as ISIS. And so for example, Saudi and Turkey are now
considering a ground military operation [lit. entry] into Syria in order to
manage the threat on them. And all of this, as you recall, is happening
while in a luxurious hall in Munich (they’re) presenting an agreement, that
even those signed on it don’t really believe it's chances of success.
