Life in prison

In every room there was a "Muchtar"1. The Muchtar was the manager
of the room. Usually it was the strongest prisoner in the room. The
Muchtar received a few more things such as a few more cigarettes, a
little more freedom. He had a different uniform and he had a bed and
not a cold mattress on the floor. Life in the prison was very hard:

   1) At night they slept on a very thin mattress in the cold nights of
      Jerusalem.

   2) The food was two bland meals a day, and every day the same
      food.

   3) There were no bathrooms; there was a bucket for every prisoner
      without privacy and without sanitation.

Every day the prisoners worked until 4:00 in the afternoon and from
4:00 in the afternoon until 5:30 in the morning they needed to be in
the room without going out.
The Jewish prisoners learned, wrote and made pretty handiwork
during this time. The families were able to visit them only once every
two months for a quarter of an hour and from afar – without getting
close. This was life in prison.
