Too Much Water

Hours of anxiety and chaos waited for tens of thousands of North California residents as they
received the announcement for an immediate evacuation. The Oroville dam, the tallest dam in the
United States, overflowed after several consecutive weeks of rain. The artificial lake was flooded,
and despite the rapid use of all manual draining systems, the massive embankment built in the
sixties was breached, and water started flowing towards nearby settlements. California authorities
decided not to take any risks and called for an immediate evacuation of about two hundred thousand
residents. Overnight, fire fighters and engineers worked from the air to try and repair the
embankment. The sun came out in the morning, the weather improved, and not just (that); the water
level dropped, California’s water authority reported (they have) control of the flow rate. Until they
are certain that the repaired embankment will hold up to another storm expected to hit the area in
the next few days, the evacuation order stands.
