E-Tone™: Ulpan-Or Weekly News Digest
Item #4 (Advanced Level)
Professor Barbie
After more or less saving the world from a pandemic, Dame Sarah Gilbert
gets the kind of honor that only a few women get. Professor Gilbert is a
vaccine expert. Not just an expert, she was the one who led the Oxford
University vaccination project for the Coronavirus. The vaccine,
developed in collaboration with the pharmaceutical company
AstraZeneca, is currently preventing the spread of the epidemic in dozens
of countries around the world. The fifty-nine-year-old British scientist
joins five groundbreaking women in the medical and exact sciences fields
who received their own Barbie doll thanks to their work during the
pandemic. For almost six decades we have known the classic Barbie doll
- a blonde model with blue eyes. But in recent years, amid growing
competition and public criticism, the look of the beloved doll has taken
on a twist. Professor Gilbert's doll is another step in an attempt to change
the image attached to the brand and perhaps also the conservative
perceptions regarding gender roles. So now that she has developed a
vaccine for Coronavirus and received a royal title for her work, Professor
Sarah Gilbert can afford to rest a little and know that she has left a mark
in more than one sense.
