Male Reproductive Physiology
• The male gonads, testis, secrets androgenic hormones, mainly Testosterone.
Through Hypothalamic–Pituitary–Testicular Axis
Testis
♠ The testis contains.
a) Leydig cells that produce testosterone.
b) Blood vessels
c) Seminiferous tubules ➔ produce sperm and house Sertoli cells.
► The testicular endocrine functions reside in Leydig cells and Sertoli cells ➔which
work to synthesize testosterone and, to a lesser extent, estradiol.
Leydig cells Sertoli cells
secretes testosterone in ✓ (In response to FSH) convert a small fraction of
response to LH. testosterone into estradiol.
Testosterone diffuses to ✓ secrete androgen binding protein (ABP) along with
Sertoli cells testosterone into the seminiferous tubular lumen
Spermatogenesis:
Definition regulated by
✓ The development of spermatogonia into 1ry ✓ testosterone, and
spermatocytes; 2ry spermatocytes; testosterone level is
spermatids; and, finally, into spermatozoa. maintained by ABP.
