Cytokines
• Considered as autacoids.
• Peptides released from the inflammatory cells.
They are classified into 5 families.
1. Interleukins
2. Colony stimulating factors.
3. Chemokines
4. Growth factor and tumor necrosis factors.
5. Interferons
Cytokines stimulate specific receptors to bring about their effects
IL-I and TNF-α involved in inflammatory – they are pre-inflammatory cytokines.
IL-4, IL-10 and inhibit inflammatory activity – they are anti-inflammatory
IL-13 cytokines
interferons α and β antiviral activity
Interferon gamma immunoregulatory activity and is used in multiple sclerosis.
