POTENTIAL IMPROVEMENTS TO CURRENT PROTOTYPE AND FURTHER
OPPORTUNITIES
The saline used within the kit provides an alternative storage medium for a knocked-out tooth than milk, if milk
is not readily available.
There is an even better solution called ‘HARTMANN’S SOLUTION’. It is the solution that dentists are
recommended to store a tooth in whilst preparing the patient for re-implanting it. It is a little more expensive,
but I can’t source in the same format of the plastic twist-to-open saline tubes – which are very user friendly.
If Hartmann’s Solution could be packaged like this, then it would be an even better solution in which to store a
knocked-out tooth.
There is a commercial product called ‘SAVE A TOOTH’ which has been specially developed to store knocked out
teeth. It is an American product and each unit costs in the region of $50. I feel that it is not a cost-effective
addition to the kit.
Currently in the Recording and Reporting pouch (purple) in the kit, there is a docket to complete to report and
record the injury. The top copy is given to the injured party and on the reverse is a QR code which opens a
worldwide public register of dentists who are dental trauma trained.
Currently this is listed by alphabetical country, but if it were possible to use a geo-location tool to allow the
nearest dentist to be listed first, I feel this would be beneficial.
I also think the kit would lend itself to develop complimentary APP which could allow the user to follow a visual
or audible guide – taking them through each step. There is an existing excellent app by the IADT, which would be
an excellent platform to build on.
It could also incorporate the geolocation services and post-trauma care instructions.
FUTURE POTENTIAL PORTFOLIO PRODUCTS
I also am in the process of developing a dental travel kit which will provide an immediate temporary solution to
dental issues that may crop up when travelling, heading off to university, or just to have in the home. This type of
product could be potentially be retailed in airports etc.
This kit also has the potential to be branded to individual dental practices so that they can retail them as part of their
products available for purchase in-house.
Additionally, the individual components of the travel kit can be sold as stand-alone treatment kits – for example,
during lockdown we have sold over 1000 temporary filling kit units on eBay between April and July 2020, so are
assured there is a market for this type of product.
During lockdown, I also was bespoke branding these kits and selling them to individual dental practices for them to
re-sell to their patients, so this is also a significant and untapped market to enter.
