Although tooth protection and prevention of injury is the mainstay of GUMSHIELDS2GO™, we also want to tap into
the market of the treatment and management of a tooth trauma – which may not even be contact sports related,
but occur in the home environment or playground. A trampoline or scooter incident is just as likely to result in a
tooth injury.
Whilst studying for my Certificate in Sports Dentistry, it became apparent to me through research, that there didn’t
seem to be a comprehensive commercial kit available to the public to manage a tooth trauma and therefore there
was a potential gap in the market. Whilst there are numerous medical first aid kits to choose from through
wholesale sports retailers, none of them cater to or are tailored for a dental injury. Over the course of the last 3
years I have gleaned from the representatives of the many clubs and schools that I work with, that there is a demand
and definite concern that this type of injury has no specific guidance and they don’t have the appropriate kit to
manage such an event.
How the first 20 minutes of a tooth trauma are managed will have a massive impact on the survival of the tooth.
When a patient presents to the dentist, often at least an hour following the event – it is often difficult to save the
tooth because the injury was not managed effectively at the scene of the incident.
As a result, I have devised a scenario-based, modular emergency dental trauma kit. To my knowledge there isn’t a
product like it in the market. This directs the user via a simple flow chart to the scenario they find themselves in. The
appropriate pouch then provides them with all the equipment they require and clear instructions to follow – which
will guide the injured party through their initial management and on to follow-up care. This also means that
following initial purchase of the kit, the kit will also require to be restocked following use, leading to increased
revenue.
The kit instructions follow the recommended INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF DENTAL TRAUMATOLOGY (IADT)
guidelines, which is the gold standard management of dental trauma management internationally. Therefore, this kit
has the opportunity to be marketed globally as these standards are acknowledged worldwide.
Just before COVID-19 I was finalising my prototype demo kit. I had been in contact with InvestNI regarding becoming
a client in order to avail of a grant to bring my product to market. Unfortunately, we didn’t meet the criteria to
become a client at that stage.
I am at the stage where I require investment to assist bringing the DENTAL TRAUMA EMERGENCY KIT to market.
Having the support of an investor or panel of investors with strong sporting connections, experience in the field of
product development, outsourcing manufacturing and marketing would be extremely beneficial to me.
